The test of a good teacher is not how many questions he
can ask his pupils that they will answer readily, but how many
questions he inspires them to ask him which he finds it hard
to answer.

Hello, my name is Jill Hoppe and I will be your child’s fifth grade teacher at Sierra Verde STEM Academy for the 2011-2012 school year. I can’t express how excited I am to have been given this teaching assignment! I feel that my work ethic and vision that all students deserve the highest quality education aligns directly with the expectations you hold for the educators teaching at Sierra Verde STEM Academy.
I began teaching at SIerra Verde STEM Academy during the 2010-2011 school year. Last year was just amazing. Some remarkable accomplishments include winning the WeatherBug AZFamily 3 Jr. Forecasting contest, attending Rendezvous with a Comet field experience, inviting guest speakers into the classroom to talk "science", and securing a hot air balloon on campus for our annual STEM Literacy Night. I am planning BIGGER and BETTER this year; so hold onto your hats!
I currently have 13 years of teaching experience. My family and I moved to Arizona in August of 2008 from Elmhurst, Illinois. During my teaching career in Illinois I taught fourth grade for two years, fifth grade for two years and for eight years I worked as a Reading Specialist. I taught at risk third, fourth and fifth grade students. I held several leadership and training positions within my former school district which include: Language Literacy Leader, Teacher Assistance Team member, Team Leader, School Improvement Team member, Mentor Teacher, and Reading Incentive Team Leader. My teaching experience also includes, working in a sixth grade classroom as a long-term substitute in the Deer Valley Unified School District.
I am a certified Elementary School K-8 teacher and a Reading Specialist in both Arizona and Illinois. Last year I earned my SEI endorsement and over the summer I completed my US and Arizona Constitution requirements. I earned both my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and my Masters of Education in Reading, Writing and Literacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While obtaining my Masters of Education, I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Timothy Shanahan, a former president of International Reading Association.
On a personal level, I have been happily married for over ten years and have been blessed with two wonderful children. My
daughter will be entering third grade at at Sierra Verde and my son will be entering kindergarten also at Sierra Verde! I am quite positive you will be able to find a "Hoppe" around campus at any point of the day. We have settled into Arizona living quite well. My family and I love spending time outdoors (when it's not 115 degrees outside). I have several hobbies including reading, running and tennis. When I am not busy with school, you can usually find me with family and friends.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year helping your child grow academically, socially, and globally.
Think YES!
Smiles,
Jill Hoppe
