Step #1
Learn more about simple machines like pulleys, levers, and wedges in a fun way!
- Try to locate all the simple machines in different rooms of the house, answer questions, and
see how much you know about these often ignored but ingenious devices. Use this chart to keep
track of the simple machines you find.
EDHEADS SIMPLE MACHINES (The House) - Now find and identify the simple machines located in compound machines.
Discover how simple machines work together to get various jobs done.
EDHEADS SIMPLE MACHINES (the Tool Shed) - Learn how forces and simple machines can work together to create The Odd Machine!
Research the six types of simple machines: pulley, screw, wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, and wedge. Use the worksheet to describe the machines you have researched. Simple Machine Worksheet
Use the resources below to complete the worksheet. Hand it in to your teacher when you have completed it.

Who is Rube Goldberg?
Rube Goldberg is one of the most famous cartoonists in history. He earned lasting fame for his "Rube Goldberg machines"—devices that are exceedingly complex and perform very simple tasks in a very indirect and convoluted way. Take a look through the GALLERY to see examples of his cartoons!
Step #4
Build a Rube Goldberg Machine. Use this interactive activity to learn more about levers and pulleys. Can you put a clown on stage through the use of levers and pulley?
Step #5
Create a new invention using simple machines
Work with a partner, and choose one of the following places where simple machines are used:
-garden/farm
-kitchen/restaurant
-office/school
-garage/workshop
-on a boat
-playground/amusement park
- Make a wacky invention cartoon (Rube Goldberg style) to perform a task with at least 3 simple machines
and 5 steps. Use labels to describe the sequence of activities in their picture. Be prepared to demonstrate its use and explain how it works. - Use the Simple Machine Design worksheet to complete this activity.
